The South Eastern Welsh Springer Spaniel Club Open Show 25th May 2015

Judge – Mrs Jane Eyeington (Meadowdale)

I would like to thank the committee for their kind invitation to judge at this super show.  I must thank my wonderful stewards, who kept me in line all day and the ring flowing – Thank You. The atmosphere around the ring was lovely, so nice to hear great applause for each winner. I was delighted with my main winners a super quality line up.  It was nice to be spoilt for choice.  So a huge thank you to the exhibitors for allowing me the honour of your dogs.

Veteran Dog (1,0)

1.    Mr & Mrs White        -           Fiergen Break Dancer

8 year old, who when stood has a balanced outline, thought he was well proportioned with a good length to the leg.  He has a pleasing masculine head with a typical melting Welshie expression. His body showed to be deep with a good spring to the rib cage and he has lovely bone.  Shown in good muscle tone, and moving positively, but not the enthusiasm of the veteran bitch in the challenge

Minor Puppy Dog (3,0)

1.    Mrs Buckwell                       -           Killena Dancing In The Dark

A very raw and sweet 6 month old dog, very much a baby but coping well with all the sights and sounds of a noisy hall.  Standing and moving well for his handler. For his age found him to be moderate all through with nothing overdone.  He has a good length to the foreface and lovely dark eye giving a kind expression. The depth is as expected for a youngster, and he is short coupled.  Shone in this class on the move, being very collected and true – BPD & BPIS

2.    Miss Thomas                       -           Redfirth Piece of Cake

A different stamp to this 8 month old.  His young handler was doing a grand job of trying to handle this rather head strong puppy.  He was slightly heavier in backskull, but retaining a gentle expression, he has lovely depth and spring of rib for his age.  His hind quarters showed good width.  Not the easiest to assess on the move as he tended to want to go in a different direction to the handler.  Do keep practicing you will have much fun together

3.    Buckwell & Fennell            -           Killena Disco Duck

Puppy Dog (0,0)

Junior Dog (4,1)

1.    Mr & Mrs Stone       -           Stedigan All In Good Time

A 17 month old dog, won this class on his maturity though the body, as he has super depth to the brisket and spring to the ribs.  For complete balance I would have liked a tad more length of leg.  But he has lovely bone and tight feet.  His hind quarters were correctly angulated and well toned.  Shown in lovely gleaming jacket.

2.    Miss Green               -           Eurion Jasper

Giving away a little in age being only 14 months old.  Liked this young dog for his overall size, at the moment he looks a little rangier, but  time will be his friend.  He has an appealing head, with good length to the foreface, dark eye and well placed ears.  He holds his topline well.  On the move he showed his happy and outgoing nature

3.    Mrs Gills                    -           Stagarth Don’t Stop Me Now At Brenros

Special Yearling Dog (3,0)

1.    Ms Salt                                  -           Islanza Double Dutch

A couple of nice young dogs in this class.  Winner is a 19 month old workman like dog, nothing flashy but very honest and well put together.  Liked his overall balance when stacked.  He is very nice to go over, very solid and muscular.  He has a soft and typical expression. Found him to be particularly pleasing in depth and forechest.  He has good bone and tight cat like feet.  Where he came alive is on the move, he showed real flowing and driving movement

2.    Mrs Worth                 -           Sarabande Perfect Storm (AI) ShCM

Thought this 23 month old dog was going to be my winner on first inspection, as he looked stunning when stacked.  He has a beautiful coat and turned out to perfection. Elegance and masculinity combined.  More moderate in bone than the winner, liked his overall body proportions and depth of brisket. Unfortunately today he could not match the winner on the move, but I liked him a lot

3.    Mrs Gills                    -           Stagarth Don’t Stop Me Now At Brenros

Novice Dog (3,0)

1.    Mr & Mrs Stone       -           Stedigan All In Good Time

2.    Mrs Luckett-Roynon         -           Solva Captain Vere

A more refined dog, only just out of puppy so lacking the body and finish of the winner.  He has a pleasing expression, and like his long and muscular neck which flowed well into his topline.  He is moderately boned, with good tight feet.  His hindquarters show good width of thigh and in good muscle tone.

3.    Miss Gough             -           Amanshe Golden Thunder Head

Graduate Dog (4,0)

1.    Mr & Mrs Woodhams         -           Tobermyn Minstrel Boy

3 year old dog, with a lovely head piece, being  very balanced backskull to foreface, good depth to the flews and a kind dark eye, flowing well into his long and clean neck.  He is of a nice overall size, just slightly longer cast.  He has nicely balance angulation fore and aft, with good width of thigh and super muscle tone. He moved with style, drive and showing to be true, just flying his tail a little.

2.    Mr Isherwood                      -           Amblelight Trapezium Star

I liked this dog for his overall shape and balanced outline, just not to bothered about this showing lark today! He has a pleasant head with a kind and typical expression, clean through the neck and good depth.  Moderately boned with a straight front.  Just not the movement of the winner today

3.    Mrs Buckwell                       -           Killena Tumbaa

Post Graduate Dog (3,0)

1.    Ms Salt                                  -           Islanza Lookin For Spot (AI)

I was impressed by this 2 year old, he has lovely balance and construction.  I found him most pleasing for his size and shape.  Nothing is overdone yet he is masculine and workmanlike.  He has a well shaped and typical ‘welshie’ head.  For me his points of merit were his lovely depth, and spring to the ribs which were carried well back and short coupled. Nicely angulated quarters, which were well toned.  A dog full of confidence on the move.  He is one I considered for higher awards

2.    Mr & Mrs Woodhams         -           Tobermyn Minstrel Boy

3.    Mrs Luckett-Roynon         -           Solva Giorgio

Limit Dog (4,1)

1.    Ms Salt                                  -           Islanza Spot That Duck (AI)

Litter brother to the winner of PG, again he is well balanced, for me not quite the hind quarters of his brother.  But he cuts a fine outline on the stack, all flowing beautifully.  He has handsome and chiselled head, strong and flowing neck, good bone, well ribbed and shown in super coat and condition.  He has lovely true parallel movement, but just did not seem happy today and wouldn’t carry his tail

2.    Mr & Mrs Stone       -           Stedigan Pipers Piping

Slightly larger framed dog than the winner, with lovely bone and substance.  Liked the lean and chiselled shape to his head, with a good shape to the eye, just a tad lighter in colour. Good strength to the neck, and pleasing depth all through.  He has a nicely angulated rear and shown in good muscle tone. Not quite as true in movement as the winner

3.    Mr & Mrs Wright      -           Amblelight Alioth

Open Dog (1,0)

1.    Caldwell & McDowell        -           Sh Ch Gemill Back To The Future For Cerysan JW ShCM

2.    What a splendid 4 year old dog this is, a real quality exhibit. A stunning dog with a super ring presence that cannot be ignored.  Thought him to be very smart and stylish and pushed so hard for the top award.  Liked him for his overall size, shape and type. He has a masculine and well chiselled head of the correct proportions, with a long and muscular neck.  He has a fabulous spring to the ribs and is short coupled.  He has lovely bone and tight feet, and is to be commended on his super muscled tone. Really liked the way he moved with enthusiasm and pizzazz, just not quite as clean in front today as my BD winner, but I really was splitting hairs, just loved him - RBD

Special Beginners Dog (2,0)

1.    Mr Isherwood                      -           Amblelight Trapezium Star

2.    Miss Thomas                       -           Redfirth Piece of Cake

Good Citizen Dog (4,0)

1.    Miss Barkley                        -           Sh Ch Cherryheath’s Mr Mischief JW ShCM

This 4 year old dog is like a fine wine, he has continued to blossom into maturity.  For me he is top end for size, but he has lovely balance and quality all through. His outline when stood portrays symmetry and balance with everything flowing beautifully from nose to tail. He has a lovely well proportioned head, with those dark expressive eyes.  And what a real charmer he is, the ever wagging tail and smiling eyes. A muscular neck which smoothly flows into his well held topline.  I particularly admired his depth of brisket and forechest.  But what shone for this dog today was his movement, a joy to watch, straight and true, with good reach and drive.  Delighted to award him BD and BIS

2.    Mr & Mrs Wright      -           Amblelight Alioth

A smaller framed dog, who is coming up 7 years old.  He was a lovely dog to judge with his ever wagging tail. Age starting to show on his muzzle, but this did not detract from his well balanced head  and kind expression. He is well proportioned for his size and shows good depth and body.  He has lovely hindquarters that had good width and muscle tone.  Unfortunately could not match the movement of the winner, but was true

3.    Mr & Mrs Woodhams         -           Tobermyn Minstrel Boy

Veteran Bitch (2,0)

1.    Mr & Mrs Dixon       -           Menstonia Fair Chance

Honoured to have the pleasure to judge both of these lovely veterans, both doing the breed proud.  Close decision between them.  Winner a beautifully balance bitch who holds a lovely shape when stood and on the move.  At 8 years old she is in fine fettle.  Lean and well chiselled head, super length and strength to the neck.  She has an excellent forechest and depth, and is nicely boned.  Just loved her strong and active movement, delighted to award her BVIS

2.    Mrs Caldwell                        -           Cerysan Purely By Chance

Another lovely bitch, again presenting a balanced outline, and elegant. she has a lovely flow from nose to tail.  She is well bodied with a good spring and short coupled. Today she left her clothes at home. She moved out positively but not the drive of the winner

Minor Puppy Bitch (0,0)

Puppy Bitch (0,0)

Junior Bitch (4,1)

1.    Mrs Charles             -           Stagarth A Kind Of Magic

This 16 month old bitch, certainly had a symmetrical and compact outline.  A very honest and workmanlike bitch.  She has super substance and good bone, I would perhaps like slightly tighter feet.  Brisket is well let down to the elbow with a straight front and balanced moderate angulation.  She moved around the ring with powerful and positive drive from the rear

2.    Ms Smith                   -           Isfryn Hocus Pocus

A 13 month old bitch from a different mould to winner, being more refined and slightly longer cast. she was well presented.  She has an ultra feminine head, with a clean and lengthy neck, good depth and well bodied and moderate rear angulation.  Moving true

3.    Mrs Naunton                        -           Enfys Amber

Special Yearling Bitch (6,2)

1.    Mrs Caldwell                        -           Bowdonia Bellissima For Cerysan

This bitch who is only 21 months old is made up of elegance yet having substance, she is very smart and stylish and presents a well balanced outline.  Her head is most appealing, so feminine and full of quality, slightly domed backskull, dark eye and nicely shaped flews.  She has good depth but to be ultra picky would like a little more forechest, but the ribs are carried well back.  She has well muscled and moderate rear angulation and nice and short hock to heel.  She has a lovely effortless gait, which covered the ground well. Her outgoing nature showed through in her ring presence winning her RBB

2.    Mrs Charles             -           Stagarth A Kind Of Magic

3.    Ms Smith                   -           Isfryn Hocus Pocus

Novice Bitch (6,1)

1.    Mr & Mrs Whiteman           -           Bowdonia Carman

A change of handler for this bitch in this class and what a change, she almost behaved!  A bitch of substance, a tad stronger in the backskull, but with a kind expression, she has strength and depth throughout the body, lovely straight front and tight cat feet.  Moving a little more coordinated in this class, but still being a handful

2.    Mr & Mrs Walton     -           Hillpark Princess Aurora

A more refined bitch, with nice overall balance and all in proportion.  Her head is very feminine, with a kind dark eye. She has a pleasing length to the neck, and good depth she is short coupled and has a good bend of stifle, fell away a little at the croup. Moving out well

3.    Mrs Naunton                        -           Enfys Amber

Graduate Bitch (4,2)

1.    Mr & Mrs Walton     -           Hillpark Princess Aurora

2.    Ms Smith                   -           Isfryn Hocus Pocus

Post Graduate Bitch (7,3)

1.    Mrs Madeley                        -           Barhi Flaming Star

What an elegant and neat package this bitch is.  She is of a nice size and well proportioned which I found appealing. Looking at her head there is no mistaking her gender, a refined head with a soft expression.  Found her to have a good forechest and depth, short coupled with good width to the thigh.  She did at times when stood loose her topline, but all came back together on the move.  My compliments to the handler for turning her out in sparkling coat and condition

2.    Mr & Mrs Watson    -           Welingerhill Garden Tiger Of Hillpark

Similar mould to winner for size and bone, just not quite the body and finish.  Her head whilst feminine, would have liked a little more chiselling.  But showed good length to the foreface.  She has a lovely long and muscular neck, deep through the body with good cat feet

3.    Mr & Mrs White        -           Fiergen Steamy Windows

Limit (2,1)

1.    Woodward & Thomas       -           Bowdonia Time To Dream

Lots to like about this bitch, who is coming up 3 years old, and showing all the virtues of a lovely Welshie.  Thought she was a quality bitch who pushed hard for the top honours. Her outline when stood was a picture of balance and femininity, She has such a gentle and longing expression.   She has good depth and spring to her rib cage, good width behind. She is fluid on the move and true fore and aft.  Just losing out to the younger bitch by a whisker

Open (1,0)

1.    Ms Thomas              -           Sh Ch Bowdonia Moment To Shine JW

Rather fell for this young bitch, who is not yet 3 years old, she is so full of quality. Another that knows how to show herself off to advantage. She has substance and good bone yet retains her femininity.  She looked a picture from any angle, so beautifully balanced and well made throughout.  She has a rather dreamy quality to her head, with a good width to the back skull which is nicely shaped and good length to the foreface with a tidy shaped muzzle to give that typical ‘welshie’ look.  Liked her depth and spring of rib along with her good width of thigh and super cat feet. All in all a lovely bitch.  On the move she has a lovely free flowing movement which won her BB & RBIS

Special Working Dog/Bitch (1,0)

1.    Mr & Mrs White        -           Fiergen Steamy Windows

A more scopy bitch, she has nice bone for her size.  A lovely gentle expression but would have liked a little more chiselling and stop.  She has good length to the neck which is clean and strong.  Enough depth through the body and tight feet.  Came alive on the move, which she did with drive from the rear

Special New Members Dog/Bitch (3,2)

1.    Miss Thomas                       -           Redfirth Piece of Cake

Brace Dog/Bitch (2,1)

Special Classes

Thank you to the SEWSSC for inviting me to judge the special classes and to all the exhibitors who kindly entered their dogs and had to rush their lunch ! This is a special show for me as it is the show that I entered with my first Welsh Springer Spaniel.

Special Award Junior (5) 1st Stagarth Don’t Stop Me Now at Benros. I have admired this dog from the ringside and there is no denying his masculinity. He has good head with a lovely dark eye. He is well boned with neat feet, short coupled with a good forehand and well held tail. On the move he was stylish and accurate and shown in excellent coat and condition. He won this class over a lovely young bitch who just needs to tighten up on the move. 2nd Isfryn Hocus Pocus I do like this bitch, she is very pretty, a good size and shown in lovely coat and condition. She is very happy, merry and active on the move and is one for the future I think. 3rd Stagarth A Kind of Magic

Special Award Post Graduate (5)  1st Bowdonia Time To Dream. A beautiful headed bitch with a very sweet expression. She has a balanced outline, good bone and feet and is topped off with a lovely red silky coat. She looked a picture standing and on the move was true coming and going and in profile. 2nd Stedigan Pipers Piping.  Another good head on this dog who also presents with a well balanced outline. He has a good forehand and moves true in front action but was a little close behind today. 3rd Solva Georgio

Special Award Open (3) A challenge to judge as they are both champions at the peak of their showing careers. 1st Sh Ch Bowdonia Moment to Shine.  Another beautiful bitch from this kennel. She is quite outstanding in conformation and therefore moved the best of the entry. I would change nothing about her – except perhaps move her to Lincolnshire! 2nd Sh Ch Gemill Back to The Future for Cerysan  A quality male with no coarseness – he has a beautiful head and expression and the silkiest of coats. Well made and moves steadily with style.A very happy boy who is  well handled and was unlucky to meet the bitch in this class.
